The Power of (Social) Networks

Very interesting example of using social networks to address an individual, business, and community need. How do we do this constructively/creatively and purposefully, one person at a time?

  2. Doesn't seem that anyone knows for sure why Charlie no longer works at Burger King . . . but what is important is that the folks at Rainbow Tire evidently heard about Charlie through the "We Support Charlie" Facebook Wall posts and offered him a job.

Nice to hear Charlie's father's appreciation for the help folks gave his son.

  3. Got this great comment comment today in a private email:

"Saw your blog post about the power of social networks - wow. It is such a can of worms! It left me with all sorts of conflicted feelings and questions -

Does the Charlie know they made this public page for him? Does Charlie understand the discussion going on there? If Charlie didn't know and didn't understand - is this a form of exploitation? Did they get his permission to use his picture? If so, now Charlie is associated with a public page where people are bashing his former employer and questioning the reason he was let go - even if he's not taking place in it - he's still associated by use of his picture. The comments from others also make assertions about Charlie's disability - you can't keep people from saying these things - how is Charlie's confidentiality and right to privacy being honored?

I think it's great that he got a new job. I think that people talk - this is an example of documenting what is probably already being talked about - however, the big difference is - it's documented. This is an area that really needs careful consideration and guidelines."

    And my reply:

"So many issues arise with it...I don't know Charlie (I do know the CRP he worked with a bit and the Tire Lady--she's a bit of a local celebrity). My wife actually tipped me off to this--it happened in the town she works in and then the local news picked it up.

Seems like it just kind of organically happened...tons of speculation both ways--against Charlie and BK...don't know what to make of it, although the end result is he's working and it doesn't seem like it involved any services.

Somehow the technology got the community involved and the community seems to address the need--a messy process, not at all intentional, deliberate, etc."
